Marianne leads 37 technologists: Working for an inclusive culture in the technology industry
Meet Marianne, finalist for the 'ODA Leader Award 2024'. Marianne's leadership is a model for diversity and inclusion in the technology industry.
Values and leadership
With the nomination for the ODA Leader Award, she hopes to inspire more people to appreciate and promote diversity in all aspects of working life.
"Being a finalist for the ODA Leader Award is a great honor," says Marianne. "It is a confirmation that the values and leadership style I represent are appreciated." Marianne emphasizes that it is not just about achieving financial goals.
We must create workplaces that are adapted to everyone, regardless of gender and diversity categories. It's about being a workplace for each other, not just for ourselves.
Role models and the importance of meaningful work
Marianne says that she has had many inspiring leaders in her career. "The best leaders supported me in finding my own career path. I was challenged to find out what matters most to me, and through this process, I could experience meaningfulness in the work. This sense of meaning is crucial for well-being and motivation, and this is something I convey to my colleagues," she explains. She emphasizes the importance of personal growth and well-being at work. Marianne highlights Geir Allan Hove, her leader at NOVA Consulting Group, who gave her the opportunity to lead Novanet eight years ago. He believed in her abilities, and that trust means a lot.
Inclusive work culture
At Novanet, where Marianne is the managing director, great emphasis is placed on inclusion and belonging. “We have initiatives such as professional evenings, lunch with refills, buddy and mentoring schemes, sports associations, and various meeting places based on interests,” says Marianne. “This ensures that all employees feel welcome and can contribute their unique perspectives.”
A funny anecdote illustrates how important it is to know your colleagues: “The person who hired me at Novanet once said that I had six months to learn the names of all my colleagues' partners. It might be a bit silly, but it emphasizes that for us, it's not just about creating results and salaries. It's about creating something more.”
Diversity and equality in the tech industry
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Marianne has faced many challenges. This has strengthened her commitment to creating an environment where women can thrive and have the same opportunities as men. “The tech industry needs more talented women, and your voice is important,” she says.
Advice for women in the technology industry
For women who want to start a career in the technology industry, Marianne has the following advice: «Stick with technology if that's what you're passionate about. Find out what motivates you, set goals based on your values, and don't be afraid to take up space. The Oda network is also a great arena for building networks and relationships in the industry.» Join the Oda network here.
Continuous professional development
To stay professionally updated, Marianne participates in book clubs, is part of network groups, attends conferences, and keeps up with industry developments. «It's important to be curious and open to new ideas and perspectives,» she says.
Motivation
What motivates her most in her work as a general manager? «It's seeing that my employees thrive and have a good workplace,» she answers.
My vision is to build a company where employees experience growth and well-being. That is what motivates me.
For developers and technologists looking for a workplace where inclusion and well-being are in focus, Marianne and Novanet are good proof that it's possible to combine technical innovation with an inclusive work culture.
