Saint-Gobain Distribution Norway: Digital Transformation with a Scalable, Data-Centric Platform | Nova Consulting Group

Driving Digital Transformation with a Scalable Data-Centric Service Platform

To accelerate digital transformation, Saint-Gobain Distribution Norway (SGDN) has built a robust Digital Service Platform that enables brands like Brødrene Dahl, Optimera, Montér, and Flisekompaniet to innovate and grow. Operating across diverse markets and ERP systems, these brands faced a fragmented digital landscape. SGDN partnered with NOVA to create a secure, scalable platform that unifies services, ensures compliance, and fosters synergy across the group.

SCOPE

Service platform development, system integration, solution architecture, DevOps, automation, identity and access management, and front-end portals.

In partnership with Nova Consulting Group, we have established a robust digital platform that will be utilized across the Nordics and serve as the backbone for our common digitalization efforts. It enables reuse across markets, reduces time-to-market for new digital services, and lowers cost through a shared and scalable foundation - while giving us the flexibility to evolve as business needs change.

The challenge

SGDN needed a solution capable of meeting complex organizational requirements. It had to support multitenancy and multiple ERP environments while ensuring secure and consistent data access across brands. The solution needed to reduce development duplication, streamline integrations, and accelerate time-to-market for new digital services. Additionally, it was critical to minimize operational risk and downtime and provide a solid foundation for fast digital development, innovation, and scalability.

The solution

NOVA designed and implemented a Digital Service Platform (DSP)—a modular, microservice-based architecture built on Microsoft Azure. The DSP acts as a bridge between core business systems (ERP, CRM, PIM) and digital solutions such as webshops, mobile apps, and portals. By centralizing and standardizing service interfaces, the DSP streamlines development, ensures secure integrations, and enables rapid innovation.

Data First – Always
At the heart of the DSP is a data-centric design philosophy. Each service owns and models its data exactly as it should be stored, ensuring clarity, consistency, and autonomy. This approach unlocks critical capabilities:

  • Data accessibility and Aggregation: Structured data domains make it simple to expose data, aggregate information across services, and deliver consistent insights to consumers and applications.
  • Access Control and Governance: Clear ownership and isolation of data enable fine-grained access control, compliance, and governance - ensuring security and trust across brands.
  • Innovation & AI: A clean, well-structured data layer provides the foundation for advanced analytics and AI-driven solutions, accelerating innovation without compromising integrity.
  • Future-Proofing: A strong data foundation makes it easier to adapt to new technologies, regulatory changes, and emerging business needs without costly rework

Performance at Scale: The DSP now handles 125 million API transactions, processes 1.1 billion messages, and delivers 1.4 TB of data monthly—making it the backbone of SGDN’s digital ecosystem.

Key Features:

  • Multitenancy: Tenant-aware services with isolated data and configurations
  • Microservices Architecture: 70-80 microservices encapsulating business logic for flexibility and maintainability
  • Cloud-Native Infrastructure: 7,500 Azure resources, 140 integrations, and automated workflows
  • Identity & Access Management: Advanced IAM solution based on Okta for secure authentication and role management
  • DevOps & Automation: CI/CD pipelines via Azure DevOps, infrastructure as code with Terraform

The Result

The Digital Service Platform has delivered measurable business value:

  • Operational Efficiency: Faster development cycles, automated workflows, and reduced downtime
  • Centralized IT and Development: Consolidation of IT resources and development efforts across brands, reducing duplication and improving governance
  • ERP Flexibility: Enabled SGDN to migrate ERP systems from on-premises to cloud without downtime or major disruptions
  • Scalability & Flexibility: Independent scaling of microservices and shared services across brands
  • Innovation Enablement: Easy data access for front-end teams, continuous testing, and rapid delivery of new digital services

    Looking Ahead:
The platform is set to expand across Saint-Gobain Distribution Nordic, establishing a shared digital backbone for the Nordic region. It enables digital solutions to be delivered with speed, flexibility, and measurable business impact, while providing a robust foundation for scalable digital and AI-enabled capabilities. This foundation accelerates innovation, shortens time-to-market, and empowers teams to build, adapt, and scale digital solutions consistently across the Nordics.
